WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A 3-year-old girl, alone for two days after her mother died unexpectedly in their New Zealand home, lived on cheese, leftover lasagna and milk and comforted herself with her teddy bear. The girl's uncle, Pete Silbery, told The Associated Press on Friday that the family last spoke to the mother, Lauren Silbery, on Oct. 19. Two days later, they were worried enough to call a friend who lived near the 28-year-old's Wellington home. The friend could see Lauren's daughter, Shylah, inside the home, but not the mother, prompting the family to call police, Pete Silbery said. Police coaxed Shylah to drag a coffee table to the door so she could reach the lock and unlock the door, before she told them, "Mummy won't wake up," Silbery said. "I can only imagine her in there for that long, trying to wake Mum up as well," he said. Silbery said Shylah endured the two days alone by finding food in the refrigerator and holding ...

China has acquired a space tracking station in Australia, its first such facility in a close US ally, according to a report. The station in remote Dongara, about 350 kilometres (217 miles) north of Perth in western Australia, was used during Tuesday's launch of the Shenzhou VIII mission, Hong Kong daily the South Morning China Post reported. The United States and the European Space Agency, have long had tracking facilities in Australia, including the joint US-Australian Pine Gap satellite station established decades ago near the central outback town of Alice Springs. Reaction to the Chinese station, its first in a key US ally's territory, will be closely watched to see whether Washington will raise objections. Chinese officials reportedly see Dongara as a major step forward for the rising power's ambitious space programme, which it holds as a symbol of its growing global stature. Xie Jingwen, deputy chief designer of the tracking and command system for Beijin...

NEW DELHI (AP) — Sachin Tendulkar passed 15,000 test runs as India closed in on a comfortable victory over West Indies in the first test at Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium on Tuesday. The world's leading runscorer in tests and one-dayers became the first to touch the new mark with a single off legspinner Devendra Bishoo to move to 28 on his way to 33 not out at stumps on day three. Tendulkar raised his bat and looked towards the sky on reaching the landmark and was congratulated by batting partner Rahul Dravid and the West Indies players. The day's play finished soon after, with Dravid not out on 30, and India at 152-2 in its second innings, chasing 276 for the win with two days left. India was in position for the win thanks mainly to offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who took 6-47 to help bowl out West Indies for 180 in its second innings. Ashwin became the second most successful India bowler on debut with match figures of 9-128. Only legspinner Narendra Hirwani produced be...

The devil was hidden in the details of clouds at the top of fresco number 20 in the cycle of the scenes in the life and death of St Francis painted by Giotto in the 13th century. The discovery was made by Italian art historian Chiara Frugone. It shows a profile of a figure with a hooked nose, a sly smile, and dark horns hidden among the clouds in the panel of the scene depicting the death of St Francis. The figure is difficult to see from the floor of the basilica but emerges clearly in close-up photography. Sergio Fusetti, the chief restorer of the basilica, said Giotto probably never wanted the image of the devil to be a main part of the fresco and may have painte...
